Meningococcal meningitis (Travel and Hajj)

Meningococcal disease, caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Epidemics occur in sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season, December through June  and it is recommended that travelers be vaccinated before traveling to this region. Meningococcal vaccination is a requirement to enter Saudi Arabia when traveling to Mecca during the annual Hajj.
